DIY Christmas Wreath from a Thrifted Frame

DIY Christmas Wreath from a Thrifted Frame

Sharing is caring!

So I found this frame in a thrift shop, and while it was already elegant, I wanted to transform it into a sophisticated Christmas wreath.

Supplies

  • Thrifted Frame
  • Dark Green Paint
  • Medium Green Paint
  • White Pearl Paint
  • Red Metallic Paint
  • Glass Stones
  • Paint brushes
  • Hot glue
  • Ribbon
  • Wire

First, I painted the entire frame this medium/dark green color.

It took multiple thin coats to get total coverage.

Next I mixed together a lighter green paint with some pearl white paint and began lightly dry brushing the frame. This technique delivers paint to the high points of surfaces, keeping it out of the crevices. I went over the frame multiple times, adding a bit more white each time.

Once I finished all of the painting on the frame I sealed in my work with some satin finish Mod Podge.

The red gems I had are see thru so I used some red metallic paint on the backs of them to make them bolder.

Definitely plan out your gem placements before getting out the hot glue! I changed my mind multiple times. It would have been a real pain to pull them up and risk damaging the paint job.

I hot glued these glass gems all over the frame. The gems really help break up all of the green and elevate the wreath. As another finishing touch I painted the the teardrop shapes around the outside of the frame with more of the pearl white paint.

I actually popped off the hanger on the back, and moved it so the frame could hang as a beautiful diamond shape.

To cover up the area with the missing plaster I hot glued the bow right over it. I actually stole this bow from a Fall project, the color and texture was perfect to go with this wreath. The great thing about this ribbon is that it is wired so I could manipulate the ribbon to create these wavy tails on the bow!
