How To Make a Halloween Garland

These three adorable yarn halloween crafts can be used in all sorts of ways, such as a Halloween garland! Today I am going to show you how to make a ghost, pumpkin, and spider. Then how to string them all together to make a DIY Halloween garland.

Garland Supplies

  • White Yarn
  • Orange Yarn
  • Black Yarn
  • Permanent Marker
  • Green Chenille Stems
  • Black Chenille Stems
  • Googly Eye
  • Scissors
  • Pom Pom Maker
  • Tassel Maker
  • Hot Glue
  • Twine
  • Crochet Hook

Ghosts

For these ghost tassels you will need the white yarn, permanent marker, tassel maker, and scissors.

With this particular tassel maker you can adjust the length by snapping down the extra tabs, I used the 3.75″ flap for these ghosts. To start the tassel, hold down the yarn lower than the bottom with your thumb as you begin to wrap the yarn around the maker. Keep the wraps more concentrated in one spot with lots of overlapping to create a nice, full ghost.

Once you are satisfied with your wrapping, use a piece of yarn to tie it at the top. The easiest way to do this is by sliding the yarn under the wraps on one side of the maker and then pull it up until it reaches the top. Knot this tight.

Now the tassel can easily be pulled off of the maker. Use that long starter string to wrap around the tassel to form the head.

Tuck the end under the wraps. Cut the loops in half at the bottom.

Use the permanent marker to add a face to the head portion of the tassel.

Trim the bottom as desired. And done!

Pumpkins

For these pompom pumpkins you will need orange yarn, green pipe cleaner, and scissors.

Wrap the yarn around your hand. You can also use a piece of cardboard to do the same thing. For this one, we want the wraps to go wide and less thick.

Slide the wraps off of your hand and on top of a piece of yarn. Tie the yarn around the it the half way point.

Tie it tight with a double knot and then trim the straight strings off.

Cut off a quarter of a green chenille stem to use as the stem. Push the piece under the center tie.

Fold the stem in half and twist. Bend it to create the stem.

Spiders

For these pompom spiders you will need black yarn, black pipe cleaners, googly eyes, pompom maker, scissors, and hot glue.

Each spider uses two chenille stems cut in half. I pre-folded the four pieces for the upcoming steps.

First wrap two layers on both sides of the pom pom maker.

Next, line up the centers of the four pieces under one end of the pom pom maker, shut it.

Now snip the yarn all the way around the maker. Once it’s completely cut, tie another piece of yarn through the center of the maker. And then pull the two sided apart to release the pom pom from the maker.

Trim the pom pom as desired.

Bend each leg of the spider in half and then bend a small bit at the end to create a little foot.

To finish, hot glue the googly eyes onto the front of the spider.

Assembling Garland

Trim any long strings that may be remaining on the ghosts or spiders.

Cut a piece of twine at the desired length to be able to hang it.

Decide on an order for your garland.

To string each element onto the twine start by pushing a crochet hook through it, hooking the twine onto it and pulling it through.
