Needle Felting with Stencils
You can use stencils to make whatever shapes you want! Just place your stencil on your felting mat and fill it in shape with wool roving. I used this nice red I found and used the largest heart shape I had.
The easiest way to keep the wool as you begin is to do a few big pokes to tack it in place. I start with my large needle that I prefer to use with a wooden handle. Poke the heart until it feels like it will hold its shape.
Then, pull it up from the mat and flip it over to poke the other side. I found putting it back in the stencil helps keep it from getting wonky.
After that, I add more wool on top and go over it with a small needle to give it a nicer finish.
If you have extra fuzzies at the end, you can go in with some scissors and give it a little trim.
Needle Felted Ball
Start by pulling off some wool roving. Then, take that wool and roll it into a loose ball with your hands.
Use a large felting needle and start making a few big pokes to define the shape. Then continue poking it, so it forms a ball shape. By the end of the process, it will be a firm ball. Yes, it will shrink!
Once the ball is well-formed, go in with a small needle to smooth the surface.
Wool Blending Felted Balls
I wanted to add some pink balls to the garland, but I didn’t have a pink that coordinated with the red and off-white, so I made my own!
You can blend colors with just your hands, but I like the convenience of this dog brush!
It’s pretty easy; brush the ends of your wool over the brush so it catches some fibers—alternate a few layers of red and white.
Then pull the whole thing off and brush it all back onto the brush. Do this process several times to get it well blended.
Poking Holes
Since I will string all of these pieces to make a garland, they need holes. It’s pretty simple to do. You need an awl. Find the center of the ball, or wherever it is you want the hole, and push the awl through. I twist it around and move it up and down to ensure I have a well-defined spot.
Stringing the Felted Balls Garland
Now to put it together! I used a sewing needle and strung all the pieces onto some fishing line.
