DIY Gnome Christmas Ornament

DIY Gnome Christmas Ornament

Sharing is caring!

I wanted to make some cute and easy Christmas crafts and what’s better than diy gnome ornaments! These guys use yarn instead of faux fur which cuts down on the mess (and cost) significantly. I even made a template you can download for free.

How to make the Gnome Body

Print and cut gnome body pattern piece out of paper.

Lay the pattern piece on top of the felt. The shape can be traced onto the material or pinned in place. Cut it out of the felt for the back, and then fabric for the front.

Make a loop of bakers twine for hanging the gnome. Sandwich the knotted end of the loop between the fabric and the felt.

I used the full 6-ply of embroidery floss to blanket stitch around the entire shape.

Start on the side so your opening at the end will be on the side, which will be the easiest spot to stuff from. Bury the knot in the felt side to bring the thread out to the edge. Then pierce the needle through both layers in a spot up and to the right of the first spot. Pull it through and over the loop that forms in the thread to create the backwards “L”. Continue around the perimeter of the gnome body with those diagonal spots.

I like to put a stitch in the middle of the loop to lock it in place.

Leave 2 inches open to stuff the body full, then stitch it shut the rest of the way.

Making Gnome Beard out of Yarn

Wrap yarn around your hand to your desired fullness. Then lay it down onto the table to tie the wraps in the center as you would for a regular pompom.

Tie it nice and tight with a square knot, snip the long strings. No need to snip the loops. Straighten it out to make it a half-circle, beard shape.

Hot glue the pom pom, beard and nose onto the body, and you’re done!
