FALL 2019 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE™

CLOSET EDITION

For the past 18 years, I have been using the same dysfunctional closet. It’s cramped, dim and always a mess. Nothing is truly organized. I’m already a very busy person, but in my closet, it feels hectic, like there’s some chaotic energy in there. This six-week challenge is going to help me buckle down and really finish what I’ve started.

Burning sage has been used for centuries, the idea being that the smoke helps cleanse the energies in a space. And if I’m cleaning up all the clutter, I might as well clean the energy too. Here’s a link to a set of six California White Sage Torches.

Assessing the problems

So Here It Is:

It is dim. I cannot reach most of my things. As you can see several methods of organizing were attempted, but the whole thing was a flop. Drawers stuffed full to the point of being impossible to open or shut. Wood shelves bowing from the weight of the boxes on top of them. It’s a smaller walk-in, more like a stand-in, really.

The Lighting

One bare lightbulb in the closet makes for a gloomy atmosphere. The first thing I need is a brighter, whiter light.

Awkward Side Wall

So the skinny side wall on the right is an underutilized space, it’s in the doorway, so nothing can really jut out from the wall. It’s just kind of there. I want to make it an accent wall, make it something that will make me happy when I open the door.

Jewelry Storage

Another complication, of course, is that I do not have an easy way to organize my jewelry, It’s in one of those hanging organizers that you have to dig through to get what you need. I’m thinking of ring holders, earring storage, and hanging my necklaces.

Closet Decor

I love all of the bright, light areas I have been seeing, they seem so spacious and calm. Here is an image from KippiAtHome blog on a bedroom she redid that really defines the atmosphere I want to pull into my closet.

I just had an idea! I’m thinking about doing some live edge wood with resin for a shallow shelf unit.

Sleep Deprivation Inspiration

And of course, I found someone super talented having the same idea.

Closet Organization Inspiration

Being short complicates storage efficiency, I need to be able to reach my belongings since I use everything in my closet fairly often. But, at the same time, I want to utilize all of the space I have. They might not look like your “average shelves” but I’d like to have functional storage that will work for me at my height.
